The term “fashion” was always associated with our current political protests, so I was surprised it didn’t refer to fashion. The song criticizes mainstream media and government for effectively manipulating the masses in order to keep them distracted. Malakian wrote the song while sitting in his car waiting for his girlfriend (Jessica Miller). When it comes to understanding how American youth are only interested in fashion and materialism, whereas China’s youth were fighters for social justice. Furthermore, it points out that we have been conditioned to accept this materialistic state of mind by the media, and that the simple minded are easily distracted by the propaganda of those in authority. In the song, a man stands against a tank, which is a curious sight. If self-immolation and suicide were true, why did the Tiananmen Square massacre occur? This song is about propaganda, which distorts facts to benefit the government. The song is a warning to people to be aware of the dangers of hypnotism and to be careful about who they trust. The lyrics talk about how people can be hypnotized by the media and by the government, and how they can be made to do things against their will.
